1. Legal Affairs Intern – Arusha Tanzania Internship, I-1
Duties and Responsibilities
The Office of the President of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (referred to as the “Office of the President” and the “Mechanism” respectively) is inviting applications for a number of legal internships in Arusha, Tanzania, starting in April 2024. The typical internship term falls between three (3) months and six (6) months. In your cover letter, please specify the duration of your desired internship.
A number of crucial tasks that were previously completed by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia are assigned to the Mechanism. The President of the Mechanism (“President”) receives administrative, judicial, institutional, diplomatic, and legal support from the Office of the President to enable her to carry out her official duties. Accountabilities: Interns in the Office of the President can assist the President in carrying out a variety of specified tasks. A summer intern could:
- Carry out in-depth legal study;
- Help with the drafting and editing of court orders, rulings, and other documents;
- Support the process of preparing reports for the UN General Assembly and Security Council;
- Examine pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines;
- Aid in the composition of formal letters or speeches;
- Assist in giving advice on press and policy issues; and
- Attend court proceedings. Along with standard chores like gathering materials and compiling them, interns may also conduct other jobs as needed.
Qualifications/special skills
Candidates must fulfill one of the following requirements at the time of application: (a) be enrolled in, or have finished, the last year of a first-university law degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); (b) be enrolled in, or have finished, a law school graduate program (second university degree (Master Degree) or equivalent, or higher). To apply for the United Nations Internship Program, you do not need to have any prior employment experience. During your internship, the United Nations should profit from your education, training, advanced coursework, and abilities. It is preferred to have prior legal expertise. Candidates need to know how to use standard software on a computer.
