Danish Refugee Council (DRC)
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), which was established in 1956, is a humanitarian non-governmental non-profit organization that offers direct help to populations impacted by violence in more than 40 countries worldwide, including refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and host communities. Since the beginning of the Burundi refugee crisis in 2015, DRC has been carrying out emergency response initiatives in Tanzania in three camps for refugees in the Kigoma Region near the Burundian border. Sectors include Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Protection (CBP, PSN, GBV, CP, and Legal), Shelter and Infrastructure, and Economic Recovery are included in DRC’s integrated projects for refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities.
In close coordination with the World Food Program, United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Local Government Authorities, and other partners, the Economic Recovery Officer – Engineer will oversee and manage the smooth design and implementation of activities on asset creation and/or land restoration for increased community resilience against a variety of challenges, including food security, climate change, shocks and stresses, land degradation, and livelihoods. In order to create “asset creation” with community members in specific sites in the Kigoma region, the project method will comprise evaluations, designing, and implementation of various assets that will incorporate earthworks, stonework, and industrial materials. As a result, the engineer must be adaptable enough to operate in several places during the program.
Responsibilities:
- Make sure that the DRC meets its obligations with donors to meet the program’s stated objectives in order to be held accountable.
- Identification, evaluation, design, and implementation of livelihood and environmental programs with an emphasis on soil erosion control through resilient farming practices, preservation and management of water harvesting and storage structures, and restoration of degraded areas, including gully treatment with gabions and checkdams.
- Contribute to the development, planning, execution, oversight, and reporting of the DRC’s economic recovery program.
- Ensure that the actors and/or beneficiaries involved in the activities are properly documented.
- Make routine field or onsite visits to guarantee technical assistance for asset generation and appropriate oversight of the operations being carried out in the operational region.
- Create daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports in accordance with the manager’s and team leaders’ instructions.
Requirements:
- A university degree, an advanced diploma, or postgraduate work in agricultural engineering, irrigation and water resource engineering, or similar subjects.
- At least two years of relevant work experience in climate resilience assessments, design, and implementation of projects including building livestock dams and irrigation systems using rainwater harvesting techniques, applying techniques to boost agricultural productivity through climate resilient farming practices like terracing, digging trenches and ridges, building irrigation canals and related projects, and restoring landscapes through gully treatment, soil erosion control, irrigation, integrated watershed management, and related fields.
- Good knowledge of how farming systems, natural resources, land degradation, and food security and livelihoods are affected by climate change.
