A CGIAR initiative, the Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative (AIDI) consists of a series of rapid impact interventions designed to make sure smallholder farmers in important sub-Saharan African food production areas have access to the knowledge and innovations they need to counteract the rise in food, fuel, and fertilizer prices. Venture37 The effort seeks to provide smallholder farmers with limited resources with the knowledge, fertilizers, improved seeds, and funding methods they need to boost crop yield and output.

Within a predetermined geographic area, the Poultry Promotion Officer carries out AIDI-L field operations in accordance with project work plans. In addition to facilitating access to and the scaling up of improved dual-purpose backyard village chickens and commercial poultry from hatcheries and brooders, the Poultry Promotion Officer will engage poultry producers and assist in the growth of Poultry Producer Groups (PDGs).

This includes training producers and training of trainers (TOT) and experimenting with novel poultry production systems. In order to support investments in poultry, develop Village Savings and Loan schemes, plan Learning Exchanges, and improve the delivery of media advisory campaigns on vaccinations, health, hygiene, and production, the Poultry Promotion Officer will collaborate closely with other team members and stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Make sure that poultry farmers are involved and mobilized in order to increase the Poultry Development Groups’ (PDGs’) operational capability and their ability to obtain inputs and services.
  • Collaborate with relevant parties to facilitate the creation and implementation of chicken incubation clusters, encompassing hatcheries, brooders, and producers.
  • Train farmers on health, climate-smart practices, husbandry, and poultry production to boost output and productivity.
  • To boost acceptance and scale up of superior production techniques, identify lead farmers, assist with training on the usage of mobile corrals and CSA methodologies, test out mobile corral systems, and employ model farms and training-of-trainers to encourage peer-to-peer learning.
  • For the objective of facilitating producer access and the scaling up of better breeds of dual-purpose backyard village chickens, connect hatcheries and brooders through the incubation clusters. This will also enable commercial enterprises to have access to layers and broilers.
  • To guarantee increased poultry output, productivity, and decreased mortality, give TOTs and poultry producers ongoing extension support.
  • assistance in organizing visits by leading farmers for educational exchanges.
  • Connect farmers and PDGs with cost-share financing options, vaccination campaigns, village savings and loan programs, and other pertinent poultry-related initiatives.
  • Assist stakeholders in expanding media advisory campaigns concerning immunizations, health, cleanliness, and manufacturing.
  • Gather all of the data that is produced into IMPACTS, then promptly provide reports, work plans, best practices that have been established, and all necessary data.

Qualifications:

  • Animal/Poultry Science/Production, Veterinary Science, Agribusiness, Agricultural, Rural Development, and other related subjects are eligible for bachelor of science (BSc) degrees.
  • At least two (2) years of verifiable, pertinent field experience working on livestock development initiatives, with a focus on poultry.
  • Shown expertise in educating small-scale commercial and subsistence farmers and offering extension services, with a focus on chicken production.
  • The capacity for successful communication.
  • Able to complete tasks quickly and with little supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and spoken presentation skills; a team player.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook among other Microsoft programs.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • The capacity to ride a motorcycle over difficult terrain and the ability to get a motorcycle license in four weeks after the engagement.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Be the owner of a motorbike license.
  • An Advanced National Diploma in Veterinary Science, Animal/Poultry Science/Production, Agribusiness, Agriculture, and Rural Development
  • Experience working with small-scale subsistence farmers in Tanzania who raise indigenous or dual-purpose poultry.
  • Experience instructing others in small-scale chicken farming.
