Improving Economies for Stronger Communities (IESC)

Through enhancing the agri-finance ecosystem and bolstering the capacity of both borrowers and lenders, the Feed the Future Tanzania Agri Finance Project seeks to improve access to finance for smallholders, women, youth, and micro, small, medium, (including large) enterprises (MSMiLs) in Tanzania. In order to create more inclusive agricultural finance ecosystems, facilitate expanded and sustained lending and investment, boost productivity and incomes, and increase availability and adoption of priority technologies—including climate-smart technology—the Feed the Future Tanzania Agri-Finance Project will give priority to these interventions.

Objectives of the Assignment:

  • Create and offer the management and employees of commercial banks a customized “learn by doing” agricultural financing and lending program to improve their abilities.
  • Review current agricultural lending rules, methods, tools (such as crop calendars), products, and lending practices in collaboration with the management and employees of the commercial bank, and offer suggestions for enhancements.
  • Suggest additional steps and measures that the commercial bank should take to begin its loan recovery and agriculture lending activities, as well as to efficiently provide farmers and agribusinesses with agricultural credit and financial services.

Tasks to be Performed:

Pre-Assignment

  • Call a meeting with the Feed the Future Tanzania Agri-Finance team to go over the goals, schedule, and anticipated deliverables of the assignment.
  • To gain insight into Tanzania’s agricultural industry, financing, and lending, conduct desk research.
  • Create training materials on agricultural lending and financing based on past experience and desk research results.
  • Attend orientation to go over logistics strategies, in-country security orientation, and assignment objectives presented by the Feed the Future Tanzania Agri-Finance Project staff.
  • Call a launch meeting with the host organization to go over and confirm the goals and objectives of the assignment.
  • To gain an understanding of the current bank services, tools, procedures, and products, meet with the management and personnel of the host organization, including the heads of departments, the managing director, and loan officers.

Volunteer Engagement:

All volunteers are encouraged to take part in public outreach by USAID and IESC. Raising awareness of American workers overseas is one of the program’s main goals. IESC can support you if you would like to share your experience.

Expertise of Volunteer Expert Requested:

  • A minimum of ten years’ experience working in the fields of agriculture, agricultural economics, digital finance, access to financing, and/or agricultural finance.
  • A bachelor’s degree or above in business, economics, finance, agricultural, risk management, credit management, financial management, or another related discipline is required; an advanced degree is recommended.Preference will be given to candidates with experience and knowledge in banking, digital finance, credit management, and sub-Saharan African agricultural financing. Advanced university degree in agricultural science, finance, agribusiness, or a related field
  • Excellent financial operations abilities, including a thorough understanding of business models related to operations (primarily credit), risk management, loan recovery, and financial reporting.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities as well as the ability to make flexible and smart plans.
