The position is held by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), Arusha Branch, in the Chambers Legal Support Section. The position holder will report to the Senior Legal Officer(s) and work in cases assigned to them under the supervision of the judge(s).

A minimum of seven (7) years of steadily increasing responsibility in the legal field, either at the national or international level, is needed, with experience in criminal, international, or humanitarian law. It is preferred if you have prior experience assisting judges at the Mechanism. Desirable is prior experience working in UN International Criminal Tribunals.

Responsibilities:

Provide expert legal counsel on extremely complicated substantive and procedural issues;
Supplying judges and senior legal officers with legal support; preparing legal memoranda, doing in-depth legal research and analysis, and studying a range of legal topics in public international law, comparative law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and human rights law;
Preparing orders, decisions, and judgements in a major way as well as drafting and revising court papers;
Leading groups that assist with the trial and/or appeal stages and, as necessary, overseeing the work of subordinate legal officers on particular projects;
Keeping records of the Mechanism’s operations and advancements and keeping an eye on pertinent advancements in international law;
Serving as needed on a variety of established boards, committees, task forces, and ad hoc working groups.

Qualifications:

A Master’s degree or its equivalent from an advanced university in law, ideally with a focus on international or criminal law. In lieu of an advanced degree, a first-level university degree combined with two (2) more years of acceptable experience may be accepted.
