The Area Manager, who reports directly to the Country Director (CD) Tanzania-Burundi, is in charge of the overall coordination and strategic direction of DRC’s response in Kigoma. More than 300 people work for the DRC team in Kigoma. As part of consistent, high-quality communication to sustain positive relationships, the Area Manager will represent the DRC to local government agencies, the UN and foreign organizations operating there, funders, other stakeholders, beneficiaries, and other (I) NGOs.
Responsibilities:
- Overall management of the camp-based staff in the Nyarugusu and Nduta camps, as well as the Kigoma-based program teams in the Kibondo, Kasulu, and Makere offices. This includes making sure that relationships between coworkers are courteous, upbeat, and collaborative in accordance with the DRC Code of Conduct, and determining the staff’s ability to offer or suggest pertinent coaching or training when necessary. This is to be accomplished by strong, generalist expertise in all of the DRC’s major areas, teamwork, leadership, daily assistance, and capacity growth;
- Daily administration of the Kibondo office, including making sure that budgeting, human resources, transportation, procurement, and security are all done in compliance with DRC and donor requirements. The Livelihoods, Protection, and CCCM Managers are all directly managed by this post.
- Serve as the official spokesperson for the DRC on the ground, especially in coordination meetings with other organizations and in serving as the direct conduit for correspondence between the DRC’s offices in Tanzania and Burundi. Generally speaking, the Country Director, who will also oversee contacts with stakeholders situated outside of Kigoma, will assist the Area Manager in representing DRC to Kigoma-based stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in international development, the social sciences, law, or another pertinent discipline
- A minimum of six years of experience working in the protection sector, preferably in the areas of humanitarian relief and refugee protection, and having previous experience working for a global NGO
- Three years or more of experience required for a senior project management role
- Outstanding writing and analytical abilities
- Outstanding English, both written and spoken
- Strong sense of initiative, self-motivation, and dedication to humanitarian ideals and teamwork.
- The capacity to multitask and manage conflicting demands while meeting deadlines.
- Determine which tasks and activities are most important, then reorder the list as needed.
- Proven analytical abilities combined with the capacity to act and think strategically, as well as the use of these abilities to problem-solve and reach firm judgments.
