Danish Refugee Council (DRC)

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), which was established in 1956, is a humanitarian non-governmental non-profit organization that offers direct help to populations impacted by violence in more than 40 countries worldwide, including refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and host communities.

Since the beginning of the Burundi refugee crisis in 2015, DRC has been carrying out emergency response initiatives in Tanzania in three camps for refugees in the Kigoma Region near the Burundian border. Sectors include Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM), Protection (CBP, PSN, GBV, CP, and Legal), Shelter and Infrastructure, and Economic Recovery are included in DRC’s integrated projects for refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities.

Implementing community-based protection initiatives, such as supporting community structure, community mobilization, feedback and complaints mechanism, and community involvement, will fall within the purview of the community-based protection officer. They will assist in creating and sustaining community-based methods for camp involvement, making sure that the opinions of men, women, boys, girls, and groups with particular needs are acknowledged and represented.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the creation of community-based structures in host communities and camps, such as committees for site upkeep, peaceful cohabitation, men’s and women’s groups, and a community-based protection network. Regularly monitor the effectiveness of these structures and have meetings with the committees.
  • Assist the committee’s growth by pointing out gaps and needs and offering the most effective solutions.
  • Oversee committee elections and reelections. Orient and train newly elected members on identified needs, such as PSEA and the Code of Conduct.
  • Make routine monitoring trips to the host community villages, supervise all activities, and offer assistance when needed.
  • Have frequent meetings with committee members and the community at large to get their opinions and learn about the difficulties they encounter.
  • Organize and chair the village council members’ feedback-sharing meetings, and ensure that the minutes and input are distributed on schedule.
  • Organize the election of a committee for peaceful coexistence and make sure that people of the host community and the camp get together on a regular basis to share information and experiences, discuss issues, and follow up on resolutions reached at these meetings.
  • Arrange and oversee discussions on peaceful coexistence between representatives of the host community and refugees.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as social work, psychology, political science, development, or law.
  • Two years of practical experience providing community-based protection throughout the refugee response
  • Able to mentor, coach, and prepare employees to carry out CBP tasks.
  • Proficiency in Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Able to function in incredibly challenging living and working conditions.
  • Ability to operate under pressure and to tight deadlines; travel when needed.
