Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU)
The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) founded the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU, or the Unit) in 2006, initially receiving funding from the UK Medical Research Council (MRC). The long-standing and extremely fruitful scientific partnership between the two institutions in Mwanza served as the foundation for the establishment of the Unit. This MITU partnership began in the late 1980s, while HIV/AIDS was spreading quickly throughout East Africa.
Since HIV prevalence had not yet reached high levels and there was a chance that the research could have a significant influence on the spread of the virus, Mwanza was selected as the location for HIV prevention studies. The presence of a significant NIMR research center in the city, which could offer a solid and established foundation for the partnership, was the guiding principle behind the decision to locate research in Mwanza.
Responsibilities:
- To be in charge of the day-to-day data management of the studies that the Senior Data
- Manager; and guarantee that departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Clinical Practices (GCPs) are closely adhered to in all studies
- To use several databases to handle survey, lab, and other study data for a variety of studies
- To create study-specific data management plans and maintain an assigned studies database in close collaboration with the Senior Data Manager and study teams.
- Utilize Open Data Kit (ODK), Open Clinica, and other data management platforms to administer the program’s questionnaire and manage data.
- Organize geographic information data with Google Earth and QGIS
- Creating a data management strategy tailored to a research ; creating, validating, and maintaining a clinical trial database
- To guarantee that data inquiries are addressed, followed up on, and handled accurately and promptly
- To guarantee that field teams handle and use electronic devices (tablets and/or smartphones) for data collecting in an appropriate manner, and that they are charged and stored safely inside the data section
- Give the senior data manager and investigators regular data updates.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma in IT, computer science, or a similar discipline.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, and STATA
- Good understanding of programming.
- Familiarity with entering, managing, and cleaning data.
- The capacity to operate alone, under duress, and to tight deadlines.
- Strong organizational and communication abilities, as well as the readiness and flexibility to go when called
- Familiarity with the data management platforms RedCap, OpenClinica, and Open Data Kit (ODK)
- Experience managing research data in a research setting.
