The Sea Sense is a Non Government Organization (NGO) that works closely with coastal communities in Tanzania to conserve and protect endangered marine wildlife including sea turtles, dugongs, whales, dolphins and whale sharks.

These species, together with their habitats face a very uncertain future, mostly as a result of human activities in the coastal zone. Their continued survival is implicitly linked with the protection of the wider coastal and marine ecosystem and the wellbeing of coastal peoples.
To assist with the organization’s communication activities, Sea Sense Tanzania is looking for a creative and enthusiastic Assistant Communication Officer. Supporting the organization’s communication initiatives, such as outreach, media relations, content production, and public engagement, will be a major responsibility of the Assistant Communication Officer.
In close collaboration with the MEL Officer and other team members, the Assistant Communication Officer will create and execute communication plans that engage stakeholders, bring attention to marine conservation concerns, and advance Sea Sense’s objectives.

1. Assistant Communication Officer – Tanzania
Responsibilities
- Planning for Strategic Communication: Support the creation and execution of communication plans aimed at increasing public knowledge of Sea Sense’s environmental programs and activities.
- material Creation: Write excellent material for a range of media platforms. Press releases, blog entries, articles, and promotional materials might all fall under this category.
- Social Media Management: Keep an eye on trends pertaining to marine conservation, create interesting postings, and reply to messages and comments on Sea Sense’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
- Create eye-catching infographics, visuals, and other multimedia assets to go along with written materials and support Sea Sense’s communication campaigns.
- Media Relations: Help establish and preserve connections with journalists, media outlets, and influencers in order to produce news coverage and raise awareness of Sea Sense’s environmental initiatives.
- Community Engagement: Work together with field personnel to create activities and communication materials that are specific to the communities you serve. This will help to guarantee that messages are acceptable for the target audiences’ culture and effectively reach them.
- Event Coordination: Assist with organizing and carrying out programs, workshops, and public outreach initiatives that promote community involvement and increase public understanding of marine conservation.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism, environmental science, communications, or a similar discipline.
- Excellent writing abilities with the capacity to communicate difficult ideas in an engaging way.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva, as well as WordPress and graphic design programs.
- Familiarity with running social media pages for businesses or brands and Understanding of issues related to marine conservation
- English fluency is a must; Swahili proficiency is highly preferred.
