The Department of Geography is working with Environmental Humanities South (EHS) at the University of Cape Town to carry out a four-year research project called Critical Zones Africa, South, and East (CzASE). The Science for Africa Foundation (SFA) is providing funding for the study. Addis Ababa University, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), University of Zimbabwe, Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa, and University of Leeds (School of Earth and Environment) are among the other African research institutes it takes with it.

The CzASE Project’s finances will be managed effectively and efficiently by the Financial Administrator. The Head of the Department of Geography will receive reports from the Financial Administrator regarding issues pertaining to daily project operations.

Open Positions and Description:

1. Financial Administrator D-21

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • To oversee CzASE’s finances and financial reporting, including gathering project activity and travel expense receipts;
  • Creating accurate books of accounts and regular bank reconciliation statements;
  • Putting together financial accounts;
  • Daily preparation of payment vouchers;
  • To keep a record of accounts-related activity;
  • To keep track of and make sure that the registration for projects’ fixed assets is current;
  • To keep track of employee retirements and imprests;
  • To create several payment plans for things like stipends and allowances for students;
  • Ensure that money is spent in accordance with the CzASE budget standards by keeping track of spreadsheets and ledgers;

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possessing a degree from any accredited institution with a focus on accountancy, finance, commerce, or business administration, or any related discipline.

Key Competences:

  • Four years or more of work experience in a similar profession;
  • A first degree in accounting from an accredited university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 will be advantageous;
  • Familiarity with a range of accounting and financial management software;
  • Possess strong editing, verbal communication, and writing abilities;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • The capacity to work in detail, come up with original solutions to issues, and collaborate well with others;
  • Professional work ethics include the capacity to manage several tasks and deadlines with little supervision, as well as the ability to work accurately, efficiently, and thoroughly under pressure;
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal abilities; and
  • Willingness to take on new tasks and acquire new skills in order to adapt to the shifting requirements of a program.
