In sub-Saharan Africa, we collaborate with several partners to promote livelihood enhancement, augment food and nutrition security, augment employment opportunities, and maintain the integrity of natural resources. As part of the global agriculture research cooperation for a food secure future, CGIAR counts IITA among its members.

To assist with the IITA banana project, IITA is seeking a suitably qualified candidate for the role of Research Associate. The position is based at the IITA Office at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NMAIST) in Kijenge, Arusha.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Tanzanian and Ugandan national program officials to develop and execute consumer preference analyses for novel banana hybrids.
  • Organize panels of consumer preferences and engage with farmers to get pertinent guidance.
  • Analyze the color and texture of bananas by phenotyping.
  • Oversee the gathering of information about banana quality.
  • Reports should be prepared and delivered on time, per the supervisor’s instructions.
  • Use characterisation variables to describe different types of bananas.
  • Aid in the administration of plant material import and export.
  • Perform any other duties that the supervisor may assign you.

Qualifications:

  • MSc in Food Science, Plant Breeding, or a Similar Field.
  • The capacity to operate both individually and together as a team to complete tasks with little oversight.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Have outstanding interpersonal and English communication abilities.
  • Has a background in conducting surveys in agriculture.
  • Expertise or familiarity with gender, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Skills for evaluating food quality

The position’s initial contract is for a period of six months: Renewable based on funding availability and performance. IITA in Arusha will serve as the position’s duty station. IITA is recruiting nationwide for this role, and it offers a competitive benefits package.
