IST is a private, non-profit, independent day school with two campuses in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Students in Pre-K through grade 12 can participate in a variety of extracurricular activities at International School of Tanganyika in addition to demanding academic programs.
In order to provide students and staff with an efficient and easily accessible library service, the Assistant School Librarian works in tandem with the School Librarian to enhance and manage the library. This position supports the school community’s informational and educational needs while promoting a growth- and learning-friendly atmosphere.
Qualifications:
- Experience: more than five years of library job experience;
- A library and information management bachelor’s degree.

Responsibilities:
- Helping Patrons: To assist patrons in finding materials, navigating the library catalogue, and getting answers to questions about the services and resources available, offer hospitable, customer-focused support, advice, and referrals.
- Material Check-In/Check-Out: Manage circulation responsibilities, provide prompt, courteous service to customers.
- Library System Management: Oversee the catalog of the library, which includes classifying newly acquired volumes, maintaining patron information, making corrections and edits to system records, and carrying out the yearly inventory.
- Shelving and Organizing: Make sure that materials are properly shelved in accordance with the library’s classification system. You should also keep the stacks in order and periodically shelf-read to make sure that everything is in its right place.
- Reader’s Advice: In order to provide patrons with individualized reading recommendations, please show that you are interested in reading, have a curiosity about the collection, and are aware of popular literature and writers.
- Outreach at the Library: Participate in outreach initiatives to highlight library activities and services, such as making exhibits and other marketing collateral.
- Administrative Tasks: As needed, carry out a variety of administrative tasks, including organizing the reservation systems for library events, processing parent applications, repairing damaged books, processing new books, keeping track of holds, helping with interlibrary loan requests, and managing local newspaper subscriptions.
- Discipline and Behavior Management: Help maintain the safety, decorum, and favorable learning environment for all library users by supporting the enforcement of the rules and regulations.
- Upkeep of Library Spaces: Assist in keeping the library’s shelving sections, study rooms, and reading places neat and orderly so that visitors can enjoy a warm, stimulating, and visually appealing environment: Inform the help desk about any repairs and technical problems.
