In order to improve law enforcement’s knowledge and ability to combat the illegal wildlife trade in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, respectively, TRAFFIC International East Africa executes initiatives financed by USAID and GIZ. TRAFFIC International East Africa is expected to conduct a Zanzibar-level case law analysis as part of the GIZ-supported project to strengthen the judicial framework regarding wildlife legislation and pertinent legal mechanisms. This will help to establish the necessary understanding of which laws are being used most effectively and where further capacity or legislative amendment is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Partnership and Legal Officer to create and carry out studies aimed at fortifying Zanzibar’s legal system with respect to wildlife laws and other pertinent legal frameworks.
  • Perform fieldwork, interviewing, reviewing literature, and keeping an eye on court cases.
  • Assemble briefing papers, reports, and other communication products.
  • Provide suggestions for countering illicit and unsustainable commerce, and promote adoption in Tanzania.
  • Assist the Partnership and the Legal Officer in making sure that all project reports—annual, quarterly, and monthly—as well as any other paperwork needed by TRAFFIC and the project’s donors—including review and quality control components—are prepared and submitted on schedule;
  • Assist with project administration as required, which includes setting up workshops and meetings, composing agendas and minutes, and providing meeting preparation resources;

Qualifications:

  • It is necessary to have a bachelor’s degree in either legal studies or related social science fields like political science, wildlife and environmental studies, sociology, or communication.
  • Research and report-writing abilities.
  • It would be beneficial to be knowledgeable about wildlife regulations and conservation.
  • Working familiarity with databases, spreadsheets, word processing programs, presentations, and electronic communication technologies.
  • Expertise in doing legal and/or social science research, including gathering field data, entering data, coding, analyzing, and preparing research reports.
  • It is necessary to speak and write Kiswahili and English fluently.
