UNU-WIDER is one of the 14 research and training institutes that comprise the think tanks of the UNU system. UNUWIDER is one of the leading think tanks in the field of international development economics. The Institute provides economic research and policy suggestions in an effort to promote sustainable and equitable development for all. Established in 1985 in Helsinki, Finland, the Institute was the first research institution of the United Nations University. These days, it offers countries a range of services, including freely accessible original research and policy help, combining the finest features of a think tank, research institute, and UN agency.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform research in the field of economics pertaining to the Domestic Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Space initiative.
  • Assist the seminar team in organizing the Brown Bag and WIDER seminar series.
  • Assist the Research Unit in setting up meetings and events.
  • Keep track of new initiatives and especially the studies concerning (1) fiscal space for social protection and (2) environmental taxation to support research plans for projects in Zambia.
  • Review relevant literature.
  • Contribute to the projects’ non-academic output production. Blogs, technical notes, etc.
  • Make notes during significant meetings.

Qualifications:

  • It is necessary to have completed university coursework in one of the following fields: development studies, economics, or other related fields.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctorate, or be no more than two years (maximum) out from master’s graduation.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication abilities are necessary;
  • An advantage is having a working grasp of another UN language.

A full-time internship stipend of EUR1,399.00 per month will be provided by UNU to interns who are not receiving financial support from other institutions or universities. This stipend will help partially cover the interns’ basic living expenses during the internship.
